If you're a Fallout video game enthusiast, you'll love the idea of incorporating the iconic imagery from the wastelands into your wardrobe.

Crafts using upcycled materials and these kind designs are my favorite crafts!

Upcycled crafts are the embodiment of Fallout and wasteland survival--make the coolest jacket, one that even Preston Garvey would be envious of.

  • Fallout game series takes place in several locations across the US.
  • Fallout 1 is in Southern California
  • Fallout 2 is in Northern California
  • Fallout 3 is in Washington DC
  • Fallout New Vegas is in the Mojave Desert
  • Fallout 4 is in Boston, Massachusetts
  • Fallout 76 is in all of Appalachia

I'd love a Fallout game centered in the Cayman islands, Cape Verde, Norfolk Island, Turks and Caicos or the Dominican Republic! I need palm trees and turquoise waters!

Understanding DTF Transfers:

Before diving into the diy jean jacket, let's take a moment to appreciate the technology behind DTF transfers.

Direct-to-Film (DTF) transfers have revolutionized the way we customize fabrics.

This innovative technique allows high-quality, detailed designs to be transferred directly onto various materials--including dark fabrics, making it perfect for bringing your favorite Fallout graphics to life on your upcycled jean jackets.

Your DTF transfer selection results in a custom, authentic up-cycled jacket that is uniquely yours!

Ninja Transfers is a printing company specialized in Direct To Film Printing that I am working with for this post.

Ninja Transfers has a simple process for uploading images and placing them on the gang sheet for perfect printing.

They offer full page printing and gang sheets--I received a 10 foot gang sheet (by 22 inches) with all the pictures, images and photos I wanted (up to 50 designs) and sized them exactly how I wanted them.

There is no set up fees.

I used images that I love, but I would not use these images if I was going to sell shirts, jackets or any other merchandise.

Ninja Transfers offers free shipping in US for online customers for orders over $75. (only international orders to Canada at this time)

Pair your upcycled vintage denim jacket with a favorite graphic tee or a bright colored cotton dress.

I'm using a denim jacket with a button closure with long sleeve length and by thrifting this jacket, I'm supporting sustainable fashion!

Materials Needed for Upcycled Denim Jacket:

Materials Needed for Upcycled Denim Jacket: Fallout-themed DTF Transfer patches from Ninja Transfer Classic jean jacket Iron or heat press (Set to 310*F for 15 seconds) Parchment paper Scissors

Step 1: Choose Your Fallout Designs

Upload a bunch of Fallout-themed images onto the gang sheet sample on Ninja Transfer.

From Vault-Tec logos to Nuka-Cola imagery, choose designs that resonate with your favorite elements from the Fallout universe.

Consider mixing and matching patches for a truly personalized touch. Check out this post I did a while back featuring DTF Transfers on a jacket.

Step 1: Choose Your Fallout Designs

Step 2: Plan Your Layout

Before diving into the application process, plan the layout of your patches on the jean jacket.

Cut the DTF transfers apart carefully.

Arrange them in a way that complements the jacket's style and your personal aesthetic, balancing size and colors.

I put a DTF transfer right on the back neck of my denim jacket too.

Step 2: Plan Your Layout

Step 3: Prepare Your Jean Jacket

Ensure that your jean jacket is clean and free from any wrinkles and lint.

If needed, iron the jacket to create a smooth surface for the DTF transfers.

Lay the jacket flat on your work surface, ready for the application process.

Step 3: Prepare Your Jean Jacket

Step 4: Preheat Heat Press

Preheat your iron or heat press to the recommended temperature for DTF transfers.  (Set to 310*F for 15 seconds)

Step 4: Preheat Heat Press

Step 5: Heat Press

Carefully place the DTF Transfer patch on the desired location on the denim jacket.

Cover the DTF Transfers with a sheet of parchment paper to protect them during the heat application.

Gently press the iron or heat press onto each patch, applying even pressure for the specified duration.

The heat will activate the adhesive, bonding the patches securely to the jacket.

Step 5: Heat Press

Repeat this process over and over on the denim jacket using all the fun Fallout themed direct-to-film transfers.

Step 6: Allow to Cool

Once you've applied heat to all the patches, allow the jacket to cool before handling.

This ensures that the DTF Transfers set properly and adhere securely to the fabric.

Patience is key to achieving a long-lasting and professional-looking result.

Step 6: Allow to Cool

Step 7: Test the Adhesion

Carefully lift a corner of each DTF Transfer to ensure they are fully adhered to the jacket.

If any patches seem loose, repeat the heat application process, focusing on those specific areas.

Rubbing the edges of the DTF transfer with a felt squeegee can be helpful in adhering the edges.

Step 7: Test the Adhesion

Step 8: Add additional flair to your jacket

Add some additional flair to the jacket by getting creative with a little more texture.

You can add a bow through one of the button holes with some leftover fabrics for that added wasteland chic aesthetic.

Step 8: Add additional flair to your jacket

You can add a Nuka Cola Cap to the jacket--in the style of the Ellie badge from Up!

Place a nail in the side of the cap.

Work over a piece of scrap wood.

Hammer the nail into the cap to punch a small hole on the side.

Repeat the hole punching process and punch a hole on the other side of the cap.

Open a coilless safety pin and insert it into the holes just punched into the cap.

Bend the safety pin back to its original shape and pin it on the jacket.

It's the perfect finishing touch to the Fallout theme!

That's it!

Anyone that sees your denim jacket will love it--fans of the game will absolutely go wild--and those who have never played will just think your jacket is awesome!

Maintaining Your Fallout-Themed Jean Jacket

To ensure the longevity of your Fallout-themed jean jacket, follow these maintenance tips:

  • Wash Inside Out: Turn your jacket inside out before washing to protect the DTF Transfers.
  • Use Cold Water: Wash your jacket in cold water to prevent colors from bleeding.
  • Air Dry: Opt for air drying instead of using a machine dryer to prevent heat damage.
  • Avoid Ironing Directly: If needed, iron the jacket inside out or use a pressing cloth to protect the DTF Transfers.
