How to Make Grinch Heart Christmas Ornament Easy DIY
If you're a Grinch fan, love easy Christmas craft projects, or just enjoy creating unique keepsakes for your Christmas tree, this DIY is the perfect fun way to celebrate the holiday season.
This ornament is a nod to the Grinch heart scene from How the Grinch Stole Christmas—one of my favorite Christmas books and movies.
Inspired by the classic moment in the Grinch movie where we learn that the Grinch’s heart is three sizes too small, this hand-painted ornament adds a little whimsy—and a reminder of the true meaning of Christmas—to your holiday décor.
Let's get started!

This simple craft uses simple supplies; a wood slice, paint, and ribbon in bright colors to create a fun Grinch Christmas ornament you’ll want to hang on your own tree or give as a handmade gift.
Whether you’re a seasoned crafter or a crafty gal trying something new, this tutorial works for every skill level and is much fun to make.
Supplies You’ll Need for Wood Slice Grinch Ornament:
- Wood slice
- Acrylic paint – light purple, red, and optional green paint
- White and Black paint pen (Apple Barrel Paint Pens available Exclusively at Walmart)
- Twine or string
- Bright green ribbon for a bow
- Paintbrushes
- Mod Podge (optional sealing coat)
- Paper plate for mixing paint
- Scissors
- Piece of the marabou feather boa or small piece of the boa (optional embellishment)
- Heart gems, wooden hearts, pipe cleaners, or any creative ways to decorate (optional)
Step 1: Prep & Paint the Base
Begin with your wood slice. If there’s bark shedding, brush it away so the surface is ready to paint.
Squeeze a little bit of your light purple acrylic paint onto a paper plate or palette.
Paint the top of the wood slice, covering the entire front surface.
Let it dry completely—this gives you the best base to draw crisp lines.
Step 2: Draw the Grinch Heart Diagram
I just free handed the heart outlines, but you can cut a piece a paper to use as a pattern if desired.
The first heart should be big and round and fill the top of the painted wood slice.
Then add another dashed line heart inside the first.
Even though I did this with acrylic paint pens, let them dry completely before going in and adding the final heart shape...you don't want to accidentally smear the lines.
Now use the black paint pen to draw in the little heart shape in the center.
First outline the heart in black pen.
Then paint a small red heart in the center—representing the Grinch’s heart before it grows.
Let dry. If you want a glossy finish later, a coat of Mod Podge works great.
This simple illustration is instantly recognizable and makes a great heart ornament for any Grinch-themed tree or Christmas decor.
Step 3: Add the Bow & Twine
To finish off your ornament:
Cut a piece of twine and tie it to the top of the ornament to make a hanging loop.
Tie a big bright green bow and hot glue it at the top of the twine, it will stand out on the branches of the Christmas tree, and this is the perfect pop of Grinchy color.
Optional: Add a piece of the marabou feather boa, a mini Santa hat, or even a small piece of the boa for fluffy charm.
Your wood slice now has the perfect Grinch vibe—bold, playful, and full of character.
Optional Variations
There are fun ideas for expanding this project or making a diy kit for neighbors or friends:
- Paint grinch’s face on the back for extra flair
- Add facial features with paint pens
- Create a matching ornament from green felt
- Use transfer paper or vinyl from cricut design space
- Make a set using circles cut with a cricut machine
- Incorporate wooden hearts or heart gems
- Adapt the design for clear ornaments, the outside of the ornament, or the entire inside of the ornament
- Turn this design into a family craft activity—with adult supervision for younger kids
- You can also use the design in paper Grinch craft, grinch game props, or even hand-painted glass ornaments.
Step 4: Display Your Ornament
Hang your ornament on your Christmas tree, add it to a wreath, or tie it onto a gift.
This cute project is also a great seller at craft fairs and a creative photo idea for social media—especially if you’re sharing Grinch-themed crafts this time of year.
That's it!
