Let's get started with this step-by-step guide!
CELEBRATE THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF "HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS"
The holiday season is the perfect time to add a little handmade magic to your home!
This adorable Grinch decor sign, inspired by How the Grinch Stole Christmas starring Jim Carrey (can you believe it’s been 25 years?!), is a fun and meaningful way to celebrate the reason for the season.
This DIY sign reads: “Maybe Christmas doesn’t come from a store.”
It’s sparkly, colorful, and full of charm—just like the Whos down in Whoville!
Whether you’re decorating for a Christmas party, gifting a friend, or creating your own Grinch Christmas decorations, this simple project will add the perfect touch to your festive setup.
SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS QUOTE SIGN:
- Wood Plank Sign (got this at the Dollar Store years ago)
- Wood Letters
- Apple Barrel Paint Pens (Neon Green) (available at Walmart)
- Mod Podge Hologram Glitter
- Ribbon for Bow
- Paintbrush
- Bearly Art Precision Glue
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Twine for hanging
- Scissors
Optional: Cricut machine and Cricut Design Space (for extra embellishments like a Santa hat or Grinch face)
Step 1: Paint the Wooden Letters
Use the Plaid Apple Barrel bright green acrylic paint marker to color each wooden letter.
This vibrant green has that unmistakable Grinch stole Christmas feel—playful, mischievous, and totally festive!
Let the letters dry completely before gluing them onto your board.
If you want to add a little extra dimension, outline them with white paint or glitter glue for a frosty touch.
Step 2: Prepare the Wooden Base
Start with a wooden sign—this can be a craft-store find, or something from your Dollar Tree fanatics crafts haul!
Paint the backing of the sign with the Mod Podge Hologram Glitter and let it dry completely.
This glittery background gives the sign a whimsical, snowy shimmer that makes the green letters pop beautifully.
Step 3: Make the Bow
Layer your ribbons to create a bold and festive bow.
Start with a black and white striped bow as the base, then add a pink and white polka-dotted bow on top.
Secure them together with a dab of hot glue and attach the bow to your hanging twine.
The pop of pink adds that playful Whoville flair, while the stripes tie in a bit of traditional Christmas decor.
Step 4: Glue the Letters
Arrange your letters on the board to spell “Maybe Christmas doesn’t come from a store.”
Once you’re happy with the placement, use Bearly Art Precision Glue to adhere each letter securely.
This phrase, straight from The Grinch, is a wonderful reminder that the spirit of Christmas isn’t about presents or packaging—it’s about love, joy, and togetherness.
Just a thin bead of glue with this precision glue tip is all it needs to secure each letter in the perfect placement.
Pro Tip: Lay all the letters out first so you know exactly where to place them for perfect placement.
Some people prefer to start in the middle of the letters, but I find that it confuses my brain and I end up misspelling some words.
So lay out all the letters first to see how they fit on the board best, then glue them in place.
Step 5: Add Finishing Touches
Now it’s time to add the perfect touch!
Use your Cricut machine and Cricut Design Space to cut out a tiny Santa hat to perch on one of the letters—or maybe a Grinch face silhouette if you want to really tie in the theme.
This sign would look amazing paired with a Grinch Christmas wreath, a DIY Grinch Christmas tree ornament, or even a full Grinch wreath setup by your front door.
Display Your Grinch Christmas Sign!
Once everything is dry, hang your new Grinch decor proudly!
It’s an eye-catching addition to your Grinch Christmas decorations or even as a centerpiece at a Christmas party.
Whether you’re a Whoville resident at heart or just love festive crafting, this cheerful sign reminds everyone that Christmas means a little bit more.
That's it!
Making your own holiday signs is such a great way to slow down, get creative, and reconnect with what the season is really about.
With a few supplies, a dash of glitter, and some festive ribbon, you can make your own Grinch Christmas decorations that capture the heart of the story: Maybe Christmas doesn’t come from a store.
Because sometimes, the best Christmas gifts are the ones we make with our own two hands—and a little holiday spirit!
