THE GOOD PLACE: ELEANOR SHELLSTROP

The Good Place is a clever and heartwarming comedy series about Eleanor Shellstrop, who wakes up in the afterlife and is mistakenly placed in a utopian heaven-like neighborhood called “The Good Place.”

Realizing she doesn’t actually belong there, Eleanor teams up with fellow residents Chidi, Tahani, and Jason to try to become a better person with the help of ethics lessons, all under the guidance of their quirky architect, Michael (Ted Danson), and the all-knowing assistant Janet. (A bad place Janet costume would be fun too!)

The show blends humor, philosophy, and unexpected twists while exploring what it truly means to be a good person.

In one episode, Eleanor has to come to the first night party with the BEST PERSON sash and tiara, prepared to give a speech--make this costume as a fun and recognizable DIY last minute costume.

SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR BEST PERSON SASH AND COSTUME:

SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR BEST PERSON SASH AND COSTUME: affiliate links 4 INCH WIDE WHITE SATIN RIBBON (about 3 yards, depending on your height) BLACK IRON ON VINYL MINI HEAT PRESS CRICUT CUTTING MACHINE WEEDING TOOL HEAT SAFE MAT TEFLON SHEET HOT GLUE GUN/FABRIC GLUE OR SAFETY PINS TIARA BLACK DRESS--OR ANY BLACK OUTFIT WINE GLASS--maybe a little bit of wine ;)

Step 1: Design the Text

In your cutting machine software, type out “Best Person” in a bold, easy-to-read font (I'm using Universal Serif Free Font).

Open up Cricut Design Space and type out BESTP on one line and ERSON on the next line, fit it to the size of the mat and it should be just about right for the ribbon.

Double check the size the text so it fits along the length of your sash without looking too cramped, but fills most of the height of the ribbon.

Step 2: Cut and Weed the Vinyl

Load your black iron-on vinyl into the machine (shiny side down), and cut the design.

Once cut, carefully weed out the excess vinyl, leaving just the letters on the clear carrier sheet.

The sash in the show has gold trim and rhinestones bordering the white ribbon as well.

I decided to just make this a last-minute Halloween costume version, so it's easy and simple...and yet still recognizable without the right color border.

Make sure that when you cut out your iron on vinyl that you place the shiny side down on the mat and reverse or mirror the image.

This way the text will be the proper direction when placed on the sash.

Step 3: Measure and Cut the Ribbon

Drape the satin ribbon across your shoulder and down to your opposite hip, just like a traditional sash.

Adjust the sash for a comfortable fit and cut the ribbon to size.

Leave a few extra inches so you can overlap the ends and hot glue them at an angle.

Step 4: Position the Design

Lay your satin ribbon on a heat-safe mat with the right side of the ribbon up. (some satin ribbon has a rougher back)

Position the “Best Person” vinyl design in the center of the ribbon. (Best should start at your shoulder and face down so everyone can read it...pin or tape it in place while on so you get it matched up perfectly)

Use heat-safe tape if needed to hold it in place.

Step 5: Press the Vinyl

Heat your mini heat press to the recommended HTV setting (about 300*F).

Gently press the design in sections, holding for about 10–15 seconds each.

Move along the letters until the whole phrase is adhered.

Let it cool for a minute before peeling off the clear carrier sheet.

Step 6: Finish the Sash

Overlap the ribbon ends where they meet at your hip.

You can stitch them together, secure them with fabric or hot glue, or simply safety pin them in place if you want to just secure them quickly.

Step 7: Wear It!

That’s it—your “Best Person” sash is ready--homemade Halloween costumes are the best!

Pair it with a tiara and a glass of wine for the full Eleanor Shellstrop vibe.

Wear BLACK, or wear it with a fancy cocktail dress, just like in the show...or simply wear casual clothes to match Eleanor’s low-key Arizona dirtbag style for comedic effect.

Either way, it’s a guaranteed laugh and an instantly recognizable Good Place costume, no sewing pattern needed.
