Blue Ombre Spool Patio Table Upcycle!
This spool table has a fun nautical vibe and it's perfect for sitting on the patio for lunch! This blue finish is not quite ombre, but has variegated blue tones for the perfect Summer-ocean inspired furniture upcycle. I love a great roadside rescue project!
Here's how I did this blue ombre spool table!
This amazing spool was acquired from a neighbor that was moving and needed to downside. Essentially it was on the curb with some other goods and it was too tempting to pass on. We set it on our side patio and there it patiently waited.
My husband used the grinder and sanded down any places that were rough, including some staples poking through the spool top. He cut some logs with the chainsaw the perfect height for chairs. Then it was pretty much ready to sit at.
When I saw his great work, he said "I think it needs to be painted blue". He knows I love blue and he loves any opportunity to pull me into a project near him. So while he watered plants and cared for the rest of our yard, I painted. Check out this post to see more of the fabulous patio he created.
Supplies Needed for Blue Ombre Spool Patio Table:
Plaid Folk Art Outdoor Acrylic Paint in 3 shades of blue
Clear Wax
3 Cups for mixing
Foam Brushes
Water
Begin by mixing one part water to one part paint in one cup. I diluted the paint to give the wood more of a wash. This way you can see the gorgeous wood grain through the paint, as well as the spool markings. Then paint one board section in the lightest blue.
If you are truly going ombre, start at one side and get darker to the other side.
Repeat the process of mixing one part water to one part paint and painting the next section. You can rinse out the first cup and mix in the same cup. Use the same foam brush. Apply long, even strokes going the direction of the wood grain.
Finally mix up the darkest color in the same manner as before, one part water to one part paint.
Then let the paint dry. If done in the Summer sunshine, this will not take long at all. By the time I painted the table, then rinsed out my cups and brush, the table was already dry.
Then apply some clear wax to the table. This will seal the paint and create a water resistant surface, perfect for wiping off spilled drinks or rainy weather.
