Moon Landing Quote Painted on a Galaxy Rock

"One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind!" These famous words were spoken as a man walked on the moon--it's super fascinating to me!  The moon landing was 50 years ago on July 20th, so this week is all about our wonderful moon.  Rather than get into conspiracy theories or arguing about the moon landing, let's get to painting.  Paint a stunning galaxy on a smooth round rock and add some dragonfly glaze for a shimmer effect.

Add these fun painted rocks to a space themed party, decorating your yard or hiding somewhere fun in your city.  This fun rock is part of Craft Lightning this month...although I confess, this might take you longer than 15 minutes.  I am a fast painter! To make this rock fit better in the alloted 15 minute time frame, just paint it black and move straight to the Dragonfly glaze...then add the text, images and gloss.

Begin by painting the entire rock black. Let the black paint dry completely then use the stencil brush to add a streak of hot pink.

Next add yellow paint with the stencil brush, don't even wash the pink paint out of the brush.

Then add some blue paint on the other side.

Add some teal paint in splotchy patterns around the blue.

Let the colored paint dry, then go in with black paint and the stencil brush and add black over the top of the rock, leaving some color peaking through.

Now, the dragonfly glaze is not necessary...but it's heavy and wonderful glitter.  It changes the look of the galaxy we just painted, but worth it.

Paint small patches of dragonfly glaze all over the top of the rock. I used 6 different variations of glaze on this rock. Then let it dry completely.

Next get the white paint and the small detail paintbrush.

Pencil the quote on the rock, or just free hand it like me.  I used a simple font for the first part of the quote.  Another easy trick is to trace the rock shape on a piece of paper and then practice where to place the quote.

Then add the second part of the quote in a hand lettering script font.  Go slow and brace your hand on the table for staying steady.

Let the text dry and then add the moon, planets, stars and comet details.

Just a simple curve of gray for the surface of the moon.

Add the flag on the surface, a comet in the cosmos, add some white stars and round planets.  I love how it turned out! Finish it off with some clear gloss spray.
