Upcycled Tie Skirt!

 Happy Father's Day!
Here's a tutorial on my favorite 'father inspired' skirt!
After all, dads get tons of ties for Father's day...and when they are
old or snagged, they end up in the trash...here's a better solution!

Start with a pile of ties!
(ties can get pricey--even second hand, so find donations!)

I knew how long I wanted my finished skirt to be,
so I cut my ties all 2 inches longer than the desired length...just past my knees.

I didn't cut the layers or anything...just sew them together!

I used 32 ties to get around my waist...it just depends on the width of the tie...
as they vary quite a bit I found!
This makes a thick skirt!  But I love it!
Okay,
I trimmed off the top edge of ties so they were all even...
Then put in an invisible zipper to connect the last 2 ties together.

Then I sewed on one edge of the Double Fold Bias Tape with a zig zag stitch on the inside
to hold it all in place, unfrayed and secure.
Then flipped the bias tape around the other side and stitched it with a straight stitch.
 Looks marvelous--enough!
Easy, & no one sees the waist band!
I added 2 ties on the side for a decorative tie off!

For my daughters, I used 3 inch elastic & sewed it right to the ties!
Easier!

Ta da!
And I whipped up a headband with some leftover pieces too!

I've never received so many compliments on a
single piece of clothing as this tie skirt gets!
Most popular line from the men whenever I wear it: "hey, can I borrow a tie?"

There were two girls at church when I was growing that always wore tie skirts and I though they were so cool! Yours turned out super cute and they don't even look that hard to make :)

Hello, I found you through Pinterest. Nice skirts! I've made a tie skirt also. I got the idea from a Robin Jones Gunn book. I opened up each tie & removed the stiff inner lining. It's very light & flowy, but a slip is needed. Yeah, I also received many complements/comments. People just started giving me their old ties and some even found loads of ties from Goodwill. I have well over a hundred now. I'm getting ready to make a new skirt for myself and one for a friend. I love ties! They always catch my eye in the stores. -Rachel
Great project! Thanks for sharing the how to ;)
