How to Make Paper Flowers (Easy Craft DIY Tutorial)

Choosing the Right Paper

One of the questions I get asked most often is what kind of paper works best.

For these flowers, I recommend medium-weight cardstock because it holds its shape while still being flexible enough to curl the petals naturally.

There are many paper types you could experiment with, but heavier cardstock creates flowers that hold up well for repeated use.

While tissue paper creates soft pom-pom style flowers and coffee filters make wonderfully delicate blossoms, cardstock is my favorite choice for oversized statement flowers like these.

Step 1: Draw Your Petal Shapes

There's no need for printable templates.

Simply sketch several petal shapes onto cardstock.

I usually create:

Small center petals
Medium petals
Large outer petals

Making each layer slightly larger than the previous one helps the flowers look full and realistic.

Don't worry if every petal isn't identical. Slight variations actually make the flowers look more natural.

Step 2: Cut Out the Petals

Using ordinary scissors, cut out each petal.

One of my favorite things about this project is that you don't need a cricut machine or any other cutting machine.

Everything is hand-cut, making this an approachable project for almost anyone.

Depending on the size of your flowers, you'll likely cut anywhere from 20–40 petals per bloom.

Step 3: Shape the Petals

To give each flower dimension, gently curl the edges of the petals.

You can do this by:

Rolling the edges around a marker
Curling them with your fingers
Slightly bending the base before gluing

These little curves make a huge difference and give the finished flowers a much softer appearance.

Step 4: Make the Gold Flower Centers

The flower centers are one of my favorite details.

Using metallic gold paper:

Cut long strips.
Fold each strip in half lengthwise.
Use scissors to cut narrow fringe along the folded edge, stopping before cutting all the way through.
Roll the strip tightly.
Secure with hot glue.

Once fluffed open, the fringe creates beautiful textured centers that catch the light.

Step 5: Build the Flower

Now comes the fun part.

Begin gluing the smallest petals around the gold center.

Continue adding additional rows while gradually increasing the petal size.

Each layer overlaps the previous one slightly.

Rotate the flower as you work to keep everything balanced.

Eventually you'll have a large, full bloom with incredible dimension.

This process goes surprisingly quickly, and each flower comes together in a relatively short time once you've cut all the petals.

Step 6: Add Leaves and Gold Accents

After finishing the flower itself, cut several leaves from green cardstock.

I also added metallic gold leaves throughout each arrangement for a little sparkle.

Small gold accents tucked between the petals help tie everything together while making the flowers feel extra elegant.

Glue the leaves on the bloom further out from the center so they show from the front.

Step 7: Create a Hanging System

To make decorating simple, I glued floral wire securely onto the back of each cardboard base.

The wire forms a loop that hangs perfectly on an ordinary Command Hook.

No nails.

No wall damage.

Just hang, adjust, and enjoy.

It's an easy system that lets you arrange your own backdrops in countless different layouts.

Step 8: Mount the Flowers

Instead of attaching everything directly to a wall, I mounted each flower onto sturdy cardboard shapes.

The cardboard provides support while remaining lightweight.

Hot glue secures the finished flower to the base.

This also makes storing and transporting the flowers much easier.
