Toothpaste.
It's not really necessary...flossing and brushing with water would do just as well.
My dad never uses toothpaste.  He just follows up with mouthwash and has great teeth.
The fact is, toothpaste is loaded with things that aren't great for you.

I grew up with lots of mouth sores...kanker sores all the time.
My husband did too.
Whatever the main reason...braces, gluten sensitivity, etc...
the chemical "SLS" or Sodium Laurel Sulfate also causes and prolongs kanker sores!
And it is in nearly EVERY kind of toothpaste out there!
It is the "foaming" agent.  Rabid stuff.
It is what makes shampoo foam too.

We'll skip the discussion about fluoride.

Okay, so for years...like 12 years...I've been spending
about $8 for a tube of "boo-boo" natural toothpaste each month...let's see.
That's 12 years, 12 months...so 144 months...times $8
(because we really do use 1 tube a month)
That's $1152.00
Ouch. I can't believe I just did the math for that.
And while it's great--hardly a kanker sore in all those years...it's pricy.

Here's a homemade variety that we've been using about a month now.
If you are used to rabid foaming toothpaste, it will take some getting used to.
It's a far step up from just brushing with salt and soda...
we've done that before in our poorer times.
We tried 2 different toothpaste varieties...and then mixed the parts
we liked together...and came up with a version we are all happy with.

 Ingredients:
3 Tablespoons of Baking Soda
2 Tablespoons of Water
4 teaspoons of Vegetable Glycerin (natural preservative)
1/2 cup of Coconut oil
15 drops of spearmint oil
2-4 drops of On Guard essential oil

(Essential oils are wonderful alternatives to medicine...
On Guard is a combination of orange, clove, cinnamon,
eucalyptus and rosemary...for more info go here)

I was skeptical...well, hesitant.
Mainly with the coconut oil.
I thought I would feel like I just brushed my teeth with butter...
like that feeling on your teeth when you eat donuts.  Yuck.
But no.
This is really amazing.  It doesn't have a strong taste or smell of coconut oil at all.
It helps neutralize the baking soda...so it's quite bearable.

Of course, it took the 5 year old a little time to adjust to it, but

he brushes with the best of them!
I love that his eyes close when he smiles.  So cute!
Combine all the ingredients in a bowl...or blender.
I use a hand blender to whip all the ingredients together.
Then store in an air-tight container...or get some icing bottles
from the dollar store or the cake decorating aisle at the store.

I am looking forward to saving $1100 over the next 12 years.  :)

This all sounds doable..but personally, I'm a bit leery of whatever On Guard essential oil might be..never heard of it, and sounds weird, like a deodorant of something..can you enlighten me, please?

I've been looking for a good homemade toothpaste. I'm going to have to give this one a try.

I'm also going to feature this post in my Weekly Wrap Up on Saturday and want to make sure it's okay if I use the image from the top of the post with the link.
