27 Doodled Christmas Nativity Scene Images with Ideas

If you knew me in high school, you know how much I loved doodling little stick figure people...that's how I got the nickname doodlecraft. I would draw them and hand them out to everyone in class. I decided it was time to pick up doodling again, and create the Christmas story in doodled stick figure form.

I’ve spent a long time drawing, tweaking, redrawing, and fine-tuning this Nativity collection, and I’m so excited to finally share it!

Introducing the Doodlecraft Nativity Collection!

I wanted to create a Nativity set that felt true to me. ðŸ˜‡

DIGITAL PRODUCTS:

PHYSICAL PRODUCTS:

  • Physical Nativity Coloring Book (44 pages to color and enjoy the Bible story) ordered through Amazon! Receive a physical coloring book with biblical text to enjoy year after year...or buy one for all the kids and grandkids.

I didn’t want something overly serious or perfectly polished. I wanted something cute, playful, whimsical, and full of personality while still honoring the Christmas story.

And there are a few details in these drawings that were especially important to me.

A Nativity With a Little More Life

I included women in the manger scene because I’ve always imagined Mary having women around her, her mother, a midwife, friends.

Mary had just given birth in a stable, far from home. I can easily imagine women coming alongside her to help, comfort, and care for her and the new baby.

That little bit of imagined humanity is part of what I wanted this artwork to capture.

I also made one very intentional choice when drawing Joseph.

You’ll see plenty of AI-generated Nativity "slop" artwork where Joseph is holding a shepherd’s crook. ðŸ¤® But Joseph was a carpenter, not a shepherd!

Those little details matter to me...and this set was hand drawn and designed by me!

I wanted these characters to feel like real people while still having the adorable doodle art style that makes you want to color them, cut them out, print them, or turn them into something completely new.

And that’s exactly what this Nativity image bundle is designed for.

Turn the Nativity Into a Laser-Cut Wood Set

One of my favorite ways to use this artwork is as a laser engraved and laser-cut Nativity set.

I created a larger, substantial version from 3/8-inch Baltic birch plywood, creating sturdy little Nativity characters that can be displayed year after year.

I love the engraved images on the natural wood, of course if you made these, you could also paint them!

Each of the little characters has such a fun little face, personality and charm that adds to the manger scene.

I love that little camel, he looks great with the wise kings from the East.

If you get the digital black and white deluxe images, this engraved nativity is one of the many things you can create with it.

I also created a smaller version using 1/8-inch basswood.

The images scale up and scale down pretty well. I haven't experimented to see how tiny I can make them...but you know I will!

The same artwork can be transformed into completely different handmade Christmas projects depending on the material and size you choose.

These could have magnets added to the back for a magnet board nativity story.

Ideas include:

  • Laser-cut Nativity sets
  • Engraved Christmas decorations
  • Nativity ornaments
  • Wood Christmas signs
  • Shelf sitters
  • Christmas village displays
  • Nativity play pieces
  • Handmade Christmas gifts
  • DIY Christmas crafts

The simple doodle art style makes the characters recognizable and charming without requiring overly complicated designs.

Printable Nativity Sticker Sheets

Next up: stickers--these were the original plan!

I created a full-page 8.5 x 11 printable Nativity sticker sheet so you can print the characters at home and use them for all kinds of Christmas projects.

I also created a version specifically sized for Cricut Design Space.

Simply upload the image into Cricut Design Space, it may do a little resizing, but it will fit in the registration marks, perfect for printing and precise cutting.

The full color images are perfect for stickers!

The Cricut cuts out those little sparkle dashes around the star and the angel halo, but I didn't end up using them on my paper nativity set.

I love peeling back the negative space from the stickers!

Simply peel off a sticker and place it on a folded piece of cardstock or a block of wood cut to size.
I love the versatility of these Nativity stickers.

These folded pieces measure about 2.25x3.5 inches when folded.

This is a great way to do a kid-friendly nativity set...or make a set for each of the children in your primary or sunday school class.

Blocks of wood is another fun surface for stickers, making them a little more durable and long lasting.
I'd give the blocks a sanding and a light coat of white paint before sticking on the images.

These print and cut images would work great with printable magnet sheets as well!

That makes it easy to upload the file, print your stickers, and use Cricut Print Then Cut to create individual Nativity stickers.

Use them for:

  • Christmas planners
  • Scrapbooks
  • Handmade cards
  • Christmas gift tags
  • Bible journaling
  • Classroom activities
  • Children's Christmas projects
  • Advent activities
  • Christmas crafts
  • Holiday party activities

One set of artwork gives you a whole bunch of creative possibilities.

A Nativity Coloring Book

And then there’s my Nativity coloring book!

Or

Get a physical Coloring Book through Amazon

I turned the Nativity artwork into a full coloring book featuring bold, easy-to-color illustrations of the familiar Christmas story.

The printable coloring book PDF can be printed again and again, making it especially useful for families, classrooms, homeschool activities, church groups, and Christmas gatherings.

Prefer a physical book?

The Nativity coloring book is also available on Amazon as a professionally printed, high-quality coloring book.

The illustrations feature familiar characters and scenes from the Christmas story, including:

  • Mary
  • Joseph
  • Baby Jesus
  • Angels
  • Shepherds
  • Wise men
  • The manger
  • The Nativity animals
  • Other characters from the Christmas story
Plus Bible verses proclaiming the Birth of Jesus--read the coloring book and recount the story of Christ's birth in Bethlehem.

The bold doodle-style illustrations are simple enough for kids to enjoy, while still being fun for adults who love coloring.

Make Adorable Nativity Wood Slice Ornaments

Turn the Nativity images into sweet little keepsake ornaments with a few simple steps!

Start by choosing your favorite Nativity image--or grouping of images and importing it into your laser software.

Resize the image to fit your wood slice, then use the appropriate settings for your laser and the type of wood you're using.

I love using small natural wood slices because the organic shape and wood grain give each ornament a cozy, handmade look. Once the image is engraved, give the surface a quick sanding if needed, then add a small hole near the top for ribbon or twine.

Finish it with a pretty ribbon, baker's twine, or a bit of greenery, and you've got a charming handmade Nativity ornament that's perfect for your own Christmas tree, a thoughtful handmade gift, or a sweet keepsake to bring out year after year.

Printable Nativity Set

Bring the Christmas story to life with a simple printable Nativity set!

Start by printing the PDF onto cardstock for sturdier pieces, then carefully cut out each Nativity character and scene element.

These images print out large, about 5 inches and are easy to cut out by hand.

Cut them out as neatly and precisely as you want--or just kind of wing it.

For pieces that will get lots of use, laminate them to make them more durable and easy for little hands to handle.

You can use the finished pieces as storytelling props while teaching children the Nativity story, arranging the characters as you read through the Christmas story together.

For even more fun, glue a craft stick or popsicle stick to the back of each character and turn them into adorable Nativity puppets!

Kids can act out the story themselves, put on a little Christmas puppet show, or use the characters for imaginative play.

It’s an easy way to create a reusable Nativity activity that can be enjoyed year after year.

One Nativity Bundle, So Many Creative Possibilities

That was really the goal behind this entire collection.

A Nativity That Feels Like Me

After spending so much time drawing these little characters, they’ve become pretty special to me.

I wanted a Nativity that felt joyful, handmade, imperfect, whimsical, and full of heart.

A Nativity where Mary feels surrounded by people.

Where Joseph looks a little more like the carpenter he was.

Where the characters have personality.

And where the artwork can be used in all sorts of creative ways.

Whether you color the pages with your kids, make a wooden Nativity with your laser, print a sheet of stickers, create Christmas ornaments, or find your own creative way to use the artwork, I hope these little doodle characters bring some extra joy to your Christmas season.

Because Christmas crafting can be meaningful and fun—and I think the Nativity can absolutely be both.
