This DIY book lover gift basket combines a personalized sublimation mug, a bookish T-shirt, adorable cat socks, handmade wooden bookmarks, a journal, and hot chocolate for the ultimate cozy reading experience.
I used my xTool WonderPress (gifted) with all three modules to create several custom gifts, including a DTF shirt, sublimated mug, and custom packaging for the wooden bookmarks. I also used my xTool P3 laser to make the cutest little cat and book bookmarks. Every piece adds a personal touch, making this a thoughtful gift for anyone who loves curling up with a good book.
The best part? You can customize this idea for just about anyone! Whether you are putting together a birthday surprise, looking for DIY gift basket ideas for Christmas, or making a special Mother’s Day present, this book lover gift basket is a great option. Step 1: Make a Custom Bookish T-Shirt
A custom T-shirt is a fun way to give your gift basket a handmade feel. For this project, I used a bookish design to complement the reading theme.
I started by preparing my DTF transfer. With the xTool WonderPress Craft Oven module, I set the DTF powder according to the requirements for my transfer materials. The Craft Oven is useful for heating the powder so it melts and adheres to the printed design before the transfer is pressed onto the garment.
Once the transfer was ready, I switched to the WonderPress heat press module to apply the design to the shirt. I followed the recommended temperature, time, and pressure settings for my particular DTF transfer and garment.
DTF transfers are a great way to create colorful custom apparel without having to cut individual letters or layers of heat-transfer vinyl. You can make a shirt that matches the recipient’s favorite hobby, favorite book genre, or even an inside joke between friends.
For a book lover, try a design featuring stacks of books, reading cats, literary quotes, or a playful book-themed illustration.

Step 2: Add Cute Reading Cat Socks
The next addition was a pair of adorable socks featuring cats reading books.
These are a perfect gift basket addition because they bring a little extra whimsy to the theme.

I love mixing a larger handmade item, like the T-shirt, with smaller accessories.
The socks are a little treat that makes the basket feel more complete without requiring another major project.

You could also add fuzzy slippers, a cozy blanket, or other reading-themed accessories.

If you are making a basket for someone who loves a particular book series, look for colors and patterns that coordinate with that theme.

Step 3: Make a Floral Monogrammed Mug with the xTool WonderPress Craft Oven
A personalized mug is one of my favorite DIY gift ideas because it turns an everyday item into something special. For this book lover gift basket, I made a floral monogrammed mug featuring a fancy letter B on both the front and back. The floral pattern adds a pretty, feminine touch that coordinates beautifully with the cozy reading theme.
I used floral sublimation paper for this project, but Cricut Infusible Ink is another option for creating a similar personalized design. The xTool WonderPress Craft Oven made it possible to add this custom mug to my collection of handmade gifts using the sublimation process.
.jpg)
1: Create the Monogram Design
First, I chose a decorative letter B with an elegant, ornate style. A fancy initial is a simple way to personalize a mug without needing to create an elaborate design from scratch.
I opened the design in Cricut Design Space and sized it to fit the flat area on the mug. Since I wanted the monogram on both sides, I prepared two copies of the letter.
When working with sublimation, the design needs to be mirrored before transferring so it reads correctly on the finished item. I reversed both letters in Cricut Design Space before cutting.
2: Cut the Floral Sublimation Design
Next, I prepared my floral sublimation paper and used my Cricut machine to cut out the two mirrored letters.
If you're using Cricut Infusible Ink instead, the process is similar: select a design, mirror it, and cut it according to the material manufacturer's instructions.
Take your time when removing the excess material around the design. Keeping the edges clean helps the finished monogram look crisp and intentional.
3: Position the Monograms on the Mug
With both letters cut, I positioned one B on the front of the mug and the other on the back.
I carefully aligned each design and secured it with heat-resistant tape. The tape helps keep the sublimation material from shifting during heating, which is especially important when working with a curved surface like a mug.
Before moving on, double-check the placement of both letters. Make sure they are straight, positioned where you want them, and firmly secured against the mug.
4: Cover the Mug with a Shrink Plastic Sleeve
Here's where this project got interesting! After taping the floral monograms in place, I covered the mug with a shrink plastic sleeve and prepared it for the xTool WonderPress Craft Oven.
The sleeve was part of my particular process, rather than a universal requirement for sublimating mugs. When experimenting with an unfamiliar combination of materials, check that the sleeve, mug coating, tape, and transfer materials are all suitable for the temperatures involved. Shrink plastics can behave differently depending on their composition, so use only materials approved for the intended heating process.
5: Sublimate the Mug in the WonderPress Craft Oven
With the design secured and the sleeve in place, I put the mug into the xTool WonderPress Craft Oven module.
Sublimation works by using heat to turn sublimation dye into a gas, allowing it to bond with a compatible polymer-coated surface. When the mug has a proper sublimation coating, the dye becomes part of that coating rather than sitting on top like a conventional sticker or vinyl decal.
I followed the recommended process for my mug and sublimation materials. Temperature, heating time, and positioning are important, and the appropriate settings depend on the mug blank, transfer material, and equipment being used.
During heating, the shrink plastic sleeve shrank dramatically. I wasn't sure what to expect when I removed everything, but the sublimation transfer worked beautifully!
ac6: Remove the Transfer Materials and Reveal the Design
After the heating process was complete, I carefully removed the mug from the oven and allowed it to cool according to the material manufacturer's instructions.
Once it was safe to handle, I removed the shrink plastic sleeve, heat-resistant tape, and remaining transfer materials.
The floral monogram had transferred successfully, leaving a lovely decorative B on both sides of the mug. Despite how much the shrink plastic sleeve had shrunk, the sublimation result was exactly what I wanted.
That was such a fun result for this project! I love experimenting with the different capabilities of my xTool WonderPress, and this personalized mug became one of my favorite additions to the book lover gift basket.
Tips for Successful Mug Sublimation
Start with a mug specifically designed for sublimation. Ordinary ceramic mugs generally won't accept sublimation dye properly without a compatible polymer coating.
Mirror the design before cutting or transferring so the finished monogram reads correctly.
Use heat-resistant tape to prevent the transfer from moving during heating.
.jpg)
Follow the recommended temperature and time for your particular mug and transfer materials rather than relying on a universal setting.
Check material compatibility before using a shrink plastic sleeve in a heated appliance. Do not assume that every shrink plastic product is suitable for sublimation temperatures.
Allow the mug to cool safely before removing the transfer materials.
Keep a record of the settings and materials used so you can reproduce successful results on future projects.
A custom monogrammed mug is a wonderful handmade gift for a book lover, coffee lover, teacher, friend, or family member. Pair it with hot chocolate, tea, or coffee, and you have a thoughtful gift that can be enjoyed long after the basket has been opened.
Step 4: Laser-Cut Wooden Cat and Book Bookmarks
Every book lover needs a bookmark, so I made a couple of custom wooden bookmarks using my xTool P3 laser.
I used basswood to create little bookmarks featuring cats and books. The laser made it possible to produce detailed designs that fit perfectly with the theme of the basket.
Once the bookmarks were cut and engraved, I added a small tassel to each one. The tassels give the bookmarks a finished look and make them easier to find between the pages of a book.
Wooden bookmarks are a wonderful handmade gift because they are lightweight, useful, and easy to personalize. You could engrave a name, a favorite literary quote, a tiny floral pattern, or an illustration that matches the recipient's interests.
If you are making several baskets for friends, teachers, coworkers, or book club members, you can create a small batch of bookmarks at once and customize each one with a different design.

Step 5: Create Custom Bookmark Packaging with the xTool WonderPress 3D Form Module
After making the adorable cat and book bookmarks from 3mm basswood with my xTool P3, I wanted to create custom packaging to keep them together and ready for gifting. The little tassels are delicate, so I wanted packaging that would hold the bookmarks securely in place without tangling or getting crushed in the gift basket.
The xTool WonderPress 3D form module made it possible to create custom packaging using the 1mm PETG plastic that came with the module!
Prepare the Bookmark Packaging
First, I prepared the packaging design to fit the wooden bookmarks. Since the bookmarks are made from 3mm basswood, I made sure the packaging would accommodate their thickness as well as the little tassels attached to each one.
The goal was to create a fitted holder that would keep the bookmarks in place while allowing the tassels to sit neatly without being pinched.
Form the PETG Plastic
Next, I used the 1mm PETG plastic supplied with the xTool WonderPress 3D form module to create the custom packaging. I followed the module's recommended setup and forming instructions to shape the plastic into the packaging design. FULL TUTORIAL HERE
The PETG plastic forms a sturdy, shaped holder that helps keep the bookmarks organized and secure. Always follow the recommended settings and handling instructions for the supplied material and module.
Add the Wooden Bookmarks
Once the packaging was formed and ready, I placed the 3mm basswood bookmarks inside and arranged the tassels so they sat neatly in place.
I love how the custom packaging keeps the bookmarks together while still showing off the cute cat and book designs. It also helps protect the tassels from getting tangled with the other items in the basket.
This little packaging detail makes the bookmarks feel like a finished gift rather than just a couple of loose handmade items. It is a great way to give laser-cut projects a more professional presentation, whether you are creating gifts for friends or packaging handmade products for sale.
The xTool WonderPress is especially handy for this project because I could use the different modules to make several coordinated gifts for the same basket, from the DTF shirt to the sublimated mug and the custom bookmark packaging.
Step 6: Assemble the Book Lover Gift Basket
Now comes the fun part: putting everything together!
I started with a wire basket and lined the bottom with a tartan plaid scarf. The scarf adds a cozy, seasonal look while creating a soft foundation for the gifts.
Then I arranged the taller items first. The mug, journal, and container of hot chocolate helped establish the overall shape of the arrangement.
Next, I tucked the bookish T-shirt and cat socks into the basket, positioning them where their designs could be seen. I added the custom wooden bookmarks in their packaging so they would stay secure and easy to display.
When arranging a gift basket, think about height, texture, and color. Stand taller items toward the back and place smaller items toward the front. If something keeps tipping over, tuck it between other items or use tissue paper to help support it.
The tartan scarf works as both decoration and part of the gift. The recipient can use it as a scarf after unwrapping everything else, making it a practical addition instead of disposable filler.
You could also use kraft paper, tissue paper, or shredded paper to fill gaps and keep everything in place. If you want a more polished presentation, wrap the entire basket in clear cellophane bags or basket-wrap material and finish it with a ribbon.
Finally, attach a gift tag with a sweet message. Something as simple as “For your next cozy reading day” ties all the items together.
More Ideas for Customizing a Book Lover Gift Basket
One of the best things about DIY gift basket ideas is how easily you can change the contents to suit the recipient.
Add a bookstore gift card
A gift card is a wonderful addition because it lets the recipient choose their next read. Tuck it into the journal, attach it to the bookmark packaging, or slip it into a small envelope tied to the basket handle.
Include a candle and delicious treats
A candle, individually wrapped chocolates, cookies, or other delicious treats can turn this into a complete reading-night package. Just make sure any scented items are appropriate for the recipient and kept separate from food.
Make it a coffee lover basket
If your recipient prefers coffee over hot chocolate, swap in their favorite coffee beans, instant coffee packets, or a specialty drink mix. The personalized mug still works beautifully, and you could add a small bag of biscotti or another favorite snack.
Create a cozy reading bundle
A cozy blanket, fuzzy socks, a journal, and a mug make a wonderful combination. Choose a color palette that coordinates with the basket and add a custom bookmark for a handmade detail.
Adapt the idea for other occasions
This basket can be customized for many celebrations, including birthdays, Mother's Day, teacher appreciation, Christmas, and book club gifts.
You can also borrow ideas from other DIY gift baskets. For baby showers, a basket might feature soft toys, baby blankets, and practical essentials. For a holiday version, you could incorporate Christmas decorations, seasonal treats, and a festive mug. The same basic approach works for almost any theme.
Where to Find Supplies for DIY Gift Baskets
You don't have to spend a fortune to put together a beautiful gift basket. A dollar store or Dollar Tree can be a great place to look for wire baskets, ribbons, tissue paper, filler, gift tags, and small accessories.
Check your craft supplies before shopping, too. Leftover basswood, sublimation paper, DTF transfers, and other materials can be used to create personalized gifts without purchasing everything from scratch.
For more elaborate baskets, consider a decorative gift box, a reusable tote, or a small storage basket instead of a traditional wire basket. Don't buy a brand new basket, go to the thrift store--they are everywhere and are perfect! Your basket choice can help establish the theme and become another useful gift for the recipient.
If you are assembling several Christmas gift baskets or making last-minute gifts, choose a consistent theme and repeat a few basic supplies. You can make multiple personalized mugs or bookmarks in one batch and then vary the treats and accessories for each recipient.
Why Handmade Gift Baskets Make Such Thoughtful Gifts
The best thing about making a custom gift basket is that you can combine useful purchases with handmade items that reflect the recipient's personality.
For this book lover basket, the custom T-shirt, monogrammed mug, and wooden bookmarks make the gift feel personal, while the journal, socks, and hot chocolate create a cozy experience around reading.
The best part is that every piece can be used long after the basket is opened. The scarf becomes an accessory, the mug becomes a favorite for warm drinks, and the bookmarks can be used with every new good book.
Whether you are creating a birthday surprise, a holiday present, or a just-because gift, this project is a great option for anyone who appreciates handmade details.
Have fun creating a book lover gift basket of your own, and don't be afraid to mix handmade projects with a few favorite store-bought goodies. Sometimes the most memorable gifts are the ones that make someone feel like you really know them!
