 Chalkboard Sugar Cookies!

These are so cute and a really fun gift for teacher appreciation!

They are easy to make!

Sugar Cookies!

These ones don't spread when they bake...they are crisp and a little flavorless...but great with frosting!

2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for rolling
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature
1 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Mix, separate into 2 into disks...and place in a ziploc bag  and set in the fridge for 2 hours...or the freezer for about 20 minutes. Then remove, roll out on floured surface and bake 325 for about 12 minutes.

 Let them cool completely.

Mix up some royal icing.

This stuff is made with egg whites and not it forms a crisp sweet glaze that dries hard and shiny.  It is so fun to decorate with... but I had a horrible time with it in the humid just wont set up there!  Sorry!

Royal icing:

3 egg whites
2 cups of powdered sugar
1 drop of essential oil flavoring (I used citrus bliss)
food coloring (I used black)

Then put a sandwich zip baggie in a cup with the corner at the bottom like this.

Pour in the icing.

Twist it up and then snip just the tip...just barely. Then you have a perfect piping bag.

Pipe a border around all the cookies.

Add a spoonful of water to the icing and mix it up again... Now it will be runnier.

Squeeze some on the cookies and use a toothpick to fill in any gaps.

Let them set up...overnight.

They dry smooth and shiny.

Then I just used white food coloring and a new paintbrush to paint on the words.

Add some fun "teachy" sayings! We had a fun time making these...and since we homeschool... I'm the teacher and so I guess I get all these cookies!

Love it! These would be perfect in a cellophane bag tied with a bow!
