Vintage Frame Ring Holders!
Turn an old frame into a stunning ring display holder!
Upcycled crafts are my favorite. I love taking something old and making it something new.
Make ring display holders for gifts, displays for boutique sales, or just to display your favorite rings on your nightstand.
This fabulous tutorial on upcycling vintage Frames into Ring Display cases was done in 2012.
It was posted so long ago, I knew it was time to dust it off and push it out again. Did you see it the first time back in 2012?
If you did, you deserve a medal. 🏅
Gorgeous right? I just love to see ALL my rings in one place! These cheap cocktail rings double as home decor now!
Supplies Needed for Vintage Frame Ring Holders:
- Old Picture Frame (no glass)
- Paint (spray paint or acrylic craft paint)
- Cardboard (slightly bigger than the back of the frame)
- Towels (new, old or scraps)
- Velvet Fabric
- Hot Glue/Gun
- Ruler
- Scissors
- Craft Stick (tongue depressor or popsicle stick)
Step 1: Picture Frames
Start with some empty frames, no glass or hardware needed.
I've been fortunate enough to pick up frames at yard sales and thrift stores for a dollar or less.
Paint, glaze, finish off the frames anyway you like!
How many ring holder displays are you going to make?
I made 10 of them!
I gave 2 to my sister in laws and sold the rest. I don't have any of these left since making them in 2012.
Hmm, maybe I should make another one, just for me.
Step 2: Towels
Measurements will be slightly different based on your frame size and the thickness of the towel.
My frame's opening is 5x7 inches.
I cut 6 pieces of towel 5x8 inches.
You will need a piece of cardboard to fit a little larger than the opening of the frame.
I used cereal box type cardboard...kind of flimsy.
Begin by rolling your towel tightly until it is at least 1 inch in diameter, up to 1.5 inches.
Hot glue them tightly in long rolls.
If the rolls are too small, your rings wont stay put. If they are too big...it's weird!
Trim the edges of the rolls and then hot glue them down on the cardboard.
Glue them right next to each other on the cardboard.
You can set the frame over the top of the rolls and see how they fit in the frame at this point, then decide if you need more rolls or less.
Step 3: Velvet
Now you need some black velvet.
I usually have a pile of scrap black velvet on hand.
You could use any color of velvet.
Maybe you have an old skirt or outfit that needs to be upcycled.
The velvet will weave in and out of the rolls...with hot glue securing it to the cardboard as well.
Begin by gluing the velvet edge down on the cardboard.
Spread apart the next two towel rolls and run a band of hot glue on the cardboard.
Then wrap the velvet over the towel roll and press it down into the hot glue.
Then repeat for the next row.
Use the craft stick as you go to press the velvet down all the way to the cardboard.
This will make the difference for holding the rings tight.
Step 4: Fit in Frame
Now that the rolled up towels are covered beautifully with velvet it's time to fit them in the frame.
Double check from the front that the cardboard, towels and hot glue are all covered up by the velvet, by fitting them in the frame without gluing them in place yet.
Then put hot glue around the back edge of the frame and then fit the velvet rolled cardboard snuggly in the frame, pressing it onto the hot glue for security.
Now the frame is ready to hang on the wall, set on a shelf or give as a gift and get filled with all the fun cocktail rings.
Great for displaying rings for sale at a boutique or Farmer's Market too!
These are perfect handmade gifts--for Mother's day, birthday's or Christmas!
Holds anywhere from 10-20 rings based on ring size.
Aren't they so much fun!?
I love how they turned out.
They are all made individually.
They are simple to make and much easier after doing one--so make a whole bunch.
Gather all those old frames collecting dust and put them to good use.
This tall pink one had an easel backing and I glued the towel rolls directly to it.
I love how the ring slits are going up and down instead of horizontally on this one.
It's so unique!
Here's a great idea:
Make at least 2 of them.
Then keep one and sell the other.
Sell it to cover the costs of buying any supplies and time spent--then you'll be money ahead.
I sold 8 of my frame ring holders on my etsy shop clear back in 2012.
I can't remember exactly how much I sold them for...but between $30-50 each.
Easily $200 in profit!
Not interested in a side hustle?
No problem. Just make one for the perfect handmade gift.
Which of these frames do you like best?
I love going to yard sales, rummage sales, and especially estate sales. I love picking up old frames...they are just always so fun to upcycle.
That's it!
Hope you are inspired to turn an old frame into a beautifully ring holder display using a couple of mediocre supplies.
Upcycled crafts are the best!
