These necklaces feel tropical and exotic because of their natural nature.

This is a fun craft for Summer camps (now that they are all over, right?) or just because!

Supplies Needed:

Coconut Shell
High Gloss Resin

Twine
Wooden Beads
Mixing Cups, Stirring Sticks, Disposable work surface and gloves

Coconut to turn into jewelry

Coconut Shell!

Begin by breaking the coconut into pieces. I enlisted my husband to help me with this part. He took a rock from the garden and whacked it right on top by the 3 dots.

And just like that it cracked down the middle and he pulled it apart. Then he broke the shell into smaller pieces with the rock.

Then I picked a few pieces I liked and picked off the meat. I ate it too. Do you like fresh coconut?

Then I gave the pieces back to my husband and asked him sweetly to sand them smooth.

He sanded the tops and sides and back. I love how the smaller piece looks like a gem. Speaking of gems, my husband is amazing!

He's medically retired from the military, so we hang out every day. Every day is like Saturday for us.

Next, I had him drill holes in the tops of each piece. I could have done this all myself...but it's much more fun to work with a friend.

Resin Time!

Then I promptly took them inside to add some high gloss resin to them. This pour-on resin is divine and adds like 10 layers of varnish in one coating. Read the directions carefully and mix according to directions.

I mixed up 1 teaspoon of resin, 1/2 a teaspoon of each bottle. Then stirred for the full 2 minutes, transferred to a new mixing cup and mixed again for 1 full minute.

Then I used the stirring stick to give each coconut a glossy coat of resin. It's self leveling, so it smooths out miraculously.

Keep a straw nearby in case any bubbles form in the first 20 minutes. Just breathe through the straw close to the bubble to pop it.

Let the coconut shells dry overnight for the resin to cure.

Next day cut some twine and string them on the necklace. Add wooden beads for the final touch!

Thanks in advance, Pamela

Hi Pamela,
It's a Central Machinery 3" belt sander from Harbor Freight. Sand paper works too!
