DIY Craft: Fabric High Gloss Resin Serving Tray
I love serving trays.  There's an amazing little store by my house that sells seconds from places like Downeast and Potterybarn.  They are usually monogramed or embroidered, messed up and sold for nearly nothing.  They had a big stack of lacquered serving trays with a last name etched on them.  What's a person to do with that?  Buy a bunch of them.
By simply updating the tray it has new life and purpose.  It is gorgeous, shiny and easy to clean.
Perfect for a gift, awesome as a tv tray, sweet for breakfast in bed, or as a catch-all on the counter or table.
Supplies:
Tray (ready to be upcycled)
Fabulous Fabric (mine's from Hobby Lobby)
Mod Podge
Envirotex Lite High Gloss Resin 16 oz. kit

Begin by cutting a piece of fabric to fit snugly inside the tray.  A little border around the edges is great.  Then use Mod Podge and paint the tray, place the fabric down and cover it with more Mod Podge.  Let it dry completely.
Then read the instructions carefully for the resin.  Work in a well ventilated area, wear gloves, work on a disposable surface and follow the directions.
You will need stirring sticks and mixing cups as well.  Mix one part resin and one part hardener in one cup.  Mix well for two minutes.  Then pour the resin in the second mixing cup and use a new stick to stir again for one full minute.  Proper mixing is crucial to the outcome.
Then pour the mixed resin in the tray and tilt the tray to cover all the base of the tray.
Cover it with a board to prevent dust and debris landing in it while it cures.  Let it sit for 20 minutes, then remove the cover and use a heat gun to gently pop any bubbles that have surfaced.  Cover the tray again and let it cure for 24-48 hours.  (temperature plays a big part in how long curing takes)  Generally if it still smells like resin, it's not cured yet.
Once it's cured, it's ready to use!
Get some cookies, your journal and pens and head to the couch for some doodling, snacking and binge watching!
Once you've used high gloss resin, you'll want to put it on everything!  It is such a fun medium!
